Goals - OG, Moore

MATCH REPORT
by Nixie

A very even match between 2 teams whose title challenges had both come unstuck having lost their last 3 league matches... yet was decided by the worst decision we are likely to face in any game... and Fisher know it.

1st HALF LINE-UP (4-4-2)

The game itself, although scrappy in parts was competitive and end to end throughout. Two goals in each half, in which we took the lead twice and also witnessed some top-drawer defending.

In the first half, our goal was a scrappy affair which came from a shot from Peter Biggs at the edge of their box and took at least two deflections off their players before going past their stranded keeper. 1-0 Whits.

Their equalizer came within ten minutes, when they won a corner down our right and despite having about 5 chances to clear it, the fact that our right post was left unmarked saw the ball scrambled in from close range. 1-1.

2nd HALF LINE-UP (3-5-2)

A change to the system saw us dominate for the next 20 minutes as Fisher were unable to come to terms with our extra man in midfield. Where they had won the majority of headers in the first half, we now had control with Dave Tryhorn, Peter Biggs and Chris Stafford-Hill taking it in turns to get forward with good runs. Richard Sturdy in particular had a lot of success by running at his marker and got the better of him every time. Crosses from the left came more frequently and but for some last ditch defending, would have seen us bag a number of chances.

Our second came from a midfield run and shot from Chris Stafford-Hill, which was parried by their keeper only as far as Nick Moore, who side-footed a typical poachers goal from 2 yards out. 2-1 Whits.

... and almost immediately Fisher equalized with their best move of the game that saw a counter-attack cut through our team with a good series of passing and movement and ended with a good finish. The only goal they've scored against us in open play. 2-2.

Their winner is simply not worth talking about... we all know what happened and even though we don't like to see these things happen, Fisher know that 99.9% of referees would have dismissed their player for what he did. The fact that they were then awarded the free-kick and scored from it just made it even more unfair. 2-3 and they got their spoils.

...and we get to go through this all again next season.

MAN OF THE MATCH RESULT
Another tied result, this time between goalkeeper Tim Hillier and central defender Phil Trump. They were at their busiest in the first half, when both were called upon frequently. Tim's reactions and awareness has been on display all season, but even here he excelled with reflex saves and acted as sweeper at times. Phil dominated the back line and completely nullified both their forwards, allowing Chris Stafford-Hill the time and space to get forward to support midfield. Richard Sturdy missed out on the award by one point and would surely have won it had he scored the goal his performance deserved.
