MATCH REPORT
by Dale Quartey
What have Chertsey, City of London, some jokers last season and Old Wokingians have in common over the past few seasons? They have all made outstanding starts to their season before coming to The Manor and LOSING.
The mood in team was hard to judge going into a fixture that saw top of the table Wokingians take on a bottom of the table Whits. Knowing the clubs recent record against top of the league sides their may have been some quiet optimism against a side that had won 5 from 5 and only conceeded the one goal!

The game kicked off with Whits starting at breakneck speed, captain Kenneth Cobbett set the tone scoring within the first five minutes. 1-0 Whits. The second goal soon followed. Classic Whits football. Quartey collected the ball in his area and released a massive kick upfield. With the keeper in no mans land and the defence falling to deal with the long ball Cobbett snuck in again to nod home. 2-0 Whits.
Wokes suddenly sprung to life, and started coming forward. A missed oppotunity to clear the ball led to a Wokes throw in, the centre midfielder collected the ball, was given to much space and struck one into the top corner. Quartey got a hand to it and should have done better! 2-1.
Was this the start of the Wokes fightback? Any thoughts of this were dispelled when almost immediately, Whits strung together an impressive sequence of passing involve 5-6 different players and finished with Cobbett unleashing a sweet volley into the back of the net! 3-1
Wokes to their credit kept fighting and starting pressing further forward. Only an excellent reflex save from Quartey denied the Wokes number 10 and skipper before another fine save from a well hit freekick insured that Whits were well in control.
Surge after surge of Whits attacking saw them stretch their lead by four more goals by the break. The ball was flying in from all angles and from some of the most unlikely of scorers. Dan Jewell popped up at the far post to nod in a Cobbett cross, Chris Clarke (not a typing error), enjoyed getting forward to tap in from close range, again from another Cobbett assist before Andy Blades, starting the game in a more advanced position at right midfield bagged the first of his brace and the impressive Oli Ward ended the first half rout to make it 7-1.
2nd HALF LINE-UP
---
QUARTEY CLARKE C - TOBIAS - HIGGINS - TARLTON (Sub AITKEN) BLADES - McNAMARA - WARD - JEWELL LAKHANI - COBBETT (Cpt)
So 7-1 at half time and remember this was against a team who had only conceeded ONE goal in 5 games. The call at half time was to keep up the intensity! We knew Wokes would come out hard with pride to play for and come out they did. Pressing hard looking for some consolation but the Whits defence stood firm, limiting Wokes to shots from distance.
The first goal of the second half came from Whits and Andy Blades who got his second of the game. The former Clapham striker must have smelt his hat - trick but a shrewd move by manager Kieron Fisher saw Blades move to left back. No more hat trick for him, despite one effort direct from a free kick! The scoring was not done there however. Some sloppy play at the back saw Wokes win a penalty which was converted with Quartey diving the wrong way, before Dan Jewell steamed in to add his second of the game. Wokes scored a third to make it 9-3 but this just drove Whits on looking for number 10 which in fairness looked like coming! Hawkins having a goal chalked off for offside, and the Wokes keeper making saves from McNamara, Ward and Cobbett to keep the score at single figures!

Whits are now off the bottom and the reverberations of such a win will be felt throughout the world of football as a whole. Next up an away day in Reigate and the opportunity to avenge the 5-6 defeat from earlier in the season.
