Old Whitgiftian FC -v- Old Whitgiftian Reserves (Saturday, 01 September 2007)
This game was arranged under the title "impromptu", as there had been a few communication gremlins in the build up, which meant difficulties were experienced in obtaining a marked out pitch and referee.
Rather than cancel the fixture (which would have been the easiest option) and miss out on a vital opportunity for both players and coaches , the Club decided to follow the "turn up at a park and use jumpers for goalposts" route.
. and a very successful and enjoyable time it turned out to be.
Kieron Fisher (1st team manager) and Nixie (Reserve team manager) were both in attendance, as were 17 other stalwarts looking to impress and stake their claims. Kieron picked the sides and after Rob Tegg took the players through a pre-match session, battle commenced.
The result was irrelevant, but the fixture wasn't as it gave both managers a chance to see the players outside of their training mentality. The game was competitive to say the least with players giving very little quarter when it came to tackles and commitment. although, it must be said that none of the challenges were unfair or over-the-top and blisters being the most serious form of injury sustained .
After the game, lasting just over an hour in what you could call "quite warm" conditions on a very firm surface, the guys all decamped back to the Clubhouse for a warm down.
